Luxury Komodo Liveaboard

Almost every Komodo liveaboard, from the $292 open trip to the boat with a bathtub in the master cabin, is a Phinisi — the two-masted Indonesian hull originally built by Konjo shipwrights in South Sulawesi. The word describes the shape of the boat, not the standard of it, which is why “luxury Phinisi” in a listing title tells you almost nothing on its own.

What actually separates the tiers is smaller and more specific than the marketing suggests. Here it is.

The dividing line is the bathroom

Below roughly $700 per person for three days, the bathroom is shared — whether or not the cabin is. That is true of the shared-cabin open trips at $292 and equally true of the private air-conditioned cabins at $339.

Above it, you get an ensuite. The VIP Komodo Liveaboard at $767 puts air conditioning and a private ensuite in every single cabin, which is the cleanest expression of this tier in the catalogue. One detail worth knowing before you pack: the cabins have ensuites but toiletries are explicitly excluded.

That is the whole $400 jump. Not more islands, not a different route — a door and a shower of your own.

Three grades on one boat

The 2 Nights Komodo Liveaboard on a Phinisi takes the other approach: rather than one standard, it sells superior, deluxe and luxury cabins on the same sailing, so you choose your point on the curve rather than choosing a boat.

And it is priced differently in a way that is easy to miss and worth real money. Its $855 is quoted per group of up to two, not per person — so for a couple it works out around $428 a head, which is materially cheaper than the $767-per-person VIP boat sitting above it in every price list. Two travellers shopping the deluxe tier on headline numbers alone would pick the wrong one.

Superior is the entry cabin. Deluxe adds space and a private bathroom. Luxury is the largest, best-positioned cabin — sea-view windows, sometimes a balcony. Everyone eats the same food, does the same Padar climb and sees the same dragons; the difference is entirely where you sleep. Our breakdown of that boat lists exactly what is included at each level.

The surcharge that scales with your cabin

Here is the thing that boat’s listing puts in the exclusions and nobody reads.

There is a per-person fuel surcharge, and it rises with the cabin grade: IDR 350,000 on superior, IDR 500,000 on deluxe, IDR 750,000 on luxury. That is on top of the fare, and it is on top of the Komodo National Park entrance fee, which the same listing puts at up to IDR 750,000 per person.

Add both before you compare this boat against the VIP one. On a luxury cabin you are adding roughly $90 per person on top of the fare — which does not change the decision, but it does change the arithmetic, and it is the single most common reason a Komodo bill arrives larger than expected. What luxury does not buy you

Worth saying plainly, because the tier is easy to oversell.

Not a different itinerary. The deluxe boats run the same route as the budget ones — Kelor, Manjarite, Kalong at dusk, Padar at sunrise, Pink Beach, the ranger walk, Manta Point, the sandbars. Paying more does not add islands.

Not immunity from the weather. Manta Point is dropped for current and swell on a deluxe Phinisi exactly as often as on a $292 open trip. If protecting the itinerary is the goal, buy the extra night on the 3D2N format, not the better cabin.

Not reliable air conditioning all night. Even at this tier the generator is often shut down for part of the night. Bring a power bank.

Not exclusivity. You are still sharing the boat and the deck with other guests. If you want the vessel to yourself, that is a private charter — from $926 per person on the most-reviewed private boat, or $853 upward for a whole-vessel charter.

When the deluxe tier is genuinely worth it

Three cases, in our view.

When two nights of bad sleep would ruin the trip. A shared bathroom on a boat at 04:00 before a sunrise climb is a real thing, and some travellers should simply pay to avoid it.

When you are travelling as a couple and want a bed together. Shared-cabin bed configuration is allocated by the boat and may be singles. A deluxe cabin is booked as what it is.

When the review base is thin at the top and you want the better-documented boat. Be honest about the numbers here: the VIP boat holds 4.5 from six reviews and the Phinisi 4.5 from ten. Those are small samples next to the 77 reviews behind the $339 mid-range boat. Rating times volume is the signal, and at the top of this market the volume is thin.
